BOONE, N.C. — After dropping its suspended game to Appalachian State 3-1 earlier in the day, the East Tennessee State baseball team waited out a 42-minute rain delay to plate five runs in the seventh inning and rally past the Mountaineers 7-6 on Tuesday night. The teams finished up their suspended game from last Wednesday in Johnson City, picking it up in the bottom of the seventh with Appalachian State leading 3-1. Mountaineers reliever Josh Wilson tossed three shutout innings to preserve the win. In the nightcap, freshman Kevin Phillips reached base four times and went 3-for-3 with three runs scored to lead ETSU. Alex Reynolds finished 2-for-5 with a double and three RBIs. Derek Niesman was 2-for-4 with an RBI and scored the eventual game-winning run on Chris Riopedre’s squeeze bunt in the seventh. Clinton Freeman went 2-for-5 with an RBI. Andrew Green had three stolen bases, moving his career total to 71 and five shy of the ETSU record. Reliever Jared Burton (1-1) picked up his first win in an ETSU uniform despite giving up four unearned runs in two innings of work. William Head went 3-for-4 and knocked in four runs for Appalachian State (24-17). The Bucs (25-18) continue their five-game road swing Wednesday at Tennessee Tech.
