KINGSPORT — Hunter Carpenter drove in Luke Kirk with the winning run in the bottom of the 12th inning, and fourth-seeded Milligan fought off elimination with a 9-8 win over No. 8 Montreat on Wednesday in the Appalachian Athletic Conference baseball tournament at Hunter Wright Stadium.Carpenter also plated Tyree Jeffries in the bottom of the sixth to knot the game at 8, eventually sending it to extra innings. Carpenter, a junior from Sneedville, finished 3-for-7 with four RBIs.Johnson City native Corey McPherson was 4-for-5, scored twice and drove in one run for Milligan, which moved into a 1:30 p.m. elimination game on Thursday. Brandon Malone, a sophomore from Maryville, went 3-for-6 with two RBIs and one run scored. Kirk, a junior from Gate City, was 2-for-6 with three runs scored for the Buffaloes.Milligan and Montreat combined for 30 hits and eight errors, and used nine pitchers between them. The Buffs' fourth reliever, Justin Johnson, took the win. Ben Watson took the loss for the Cavaliers.In the night's first winners bracket game, designated hitter Preston Abshill went 4-for-4 with one RBI and two runs scored to lead Virginia Intermont to an 11-9 win over Union. Fabian Placencia and Taylor McInnis drove in two runs apiece for the Cobras, who next play Thursday at 5 p.m.VI pushed across three runs in the top of the seventh for the seesaw game's final lead change. The teams finished with 14 hits apiece.Josh Paolucci picked up the win, and Blake King took the loss.In the nightcap, top-seeded Tennessee Wesleyan remained unbeaten in the tournament with a 4-2 win over fifth-seeded Reinhardt,Justin Jameson went 6 1-3 innings to pick up the win, giving up five hits and two runs, only one of them earned. Noah Piard got the save.Matt Hartwell took the loss with his complete-game effort. He gave up 11 hits and only two of the runs he allowed were earned.In the day's first elimination game, Bryan College starting pitcher Kenny Knudsen limited St. Andrews to one earned run in a wild, but winning, effort, and the Lions eliminated the Knights from the AAC tournament with a 5-2 victory.Thursday's tournament pairings have Bryan and Union meeting at 11 a.m. in an elimination game. Milligan and Reinhardt meet at 1:30 p.m., also in an elimination game. At 5 p.m., Virginia Intermont plays the winner between Bryan and Union, and Tennessee Wesleyan awaits the Milligan-Reinhardt winner at 7:30 p.m.
