AAC baseball: Milligan falls, VI, Wesleyan roll in tournament openers

KINGSPORT — Fourth-seeded Milligan was unable to keep pace with 5 seed Reinhardt, falling 9-1 on Tuesday in the first round of the the Appalachian Athletic Conference baseball tournament at Hunter Wright Stadium.

The Buffaloes dropped into an elimination game against eighth-seeded Montreat, which fell to No. 1 Tennessee Wesleyan 10-3 in the nightcap, on Wednesday at 1:30 p.m.

Luke Kirk went 3-for-5 and Hunter Carpenter was 2-for-4 to lead Milligan (24-24), which stranded 12 baserunners in the game. Jake Watts suffered just his third loss of the season. He allowed five earned runs on five hits over four innings.In the day's second game, sixth-seeded Virginia Intermont rolled over No. 3 St. Andrews 7-1 in the day's biggest upset.Fabian Placencia went 4-for-5 with a run scored, and Seth Davis and Ryan Hankins finished with two RBIs apiece to lead the Cobras. VI outhit St. Andrews 16-8.Justin Hutton pitched the complete-game win, scattering eight hits and giving up one earned run. He walked three and struck out three.In the day’s third game, Union pushed across three runs in each of the first, fourth and eighth innings to knock off Bryan 9-4.Wednesday's schedule at Hunter Wright has St. Andrews meeting Bryan at 11 a.m. in an elimination game prior to the Milligan-Montreat matchup. Union faces Virginia Intermont in a winners bracket contest at 5 p.m., followed by Wesleyan and Reinhardt at 7:30.
