KINGSPORT — Kingsport Speedway sat silent Friday night after heavy rains swept through the area and forced the cancellation of the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series racing program. After six weeks of hard racing, Chad Finchum is the leader of the pack in the Late Model division. The Knoxville resident holds a five-point lead in the standings over Daniel Pope of Smyrna and Johnson City’s Zeke Shell.Finchum won the first race of the season and has raced consistently near the front ever since. With all of the beating and banging going on in the Late Model division, Finchum’s ability to avoid trouble has been remarkable.Consistency has also been Pope’s calling card: He has used solid finishes every week to offset the fact that he has yet to win a race this season. Shell, on the other hand, has seen his share of trouble early, but he has moved into a tie with Pope by winning each of the past two races. In Street Stock, Nick Cole and Rob Austin have been the class of the field thus far. Cole holds a one-point lead over Austin.Cole, a product of Bristol, has won three of the first six races this season to grab the points lead. Austin hasn’t won yet, but the Castlewood resident has used four runner-up finishes to keep pace.Meanwhile, everyone has struggled to keep up with the Ketrons in the Pure 4 division. John Ketron leads Jason Ketron by 14 points in the standings with Kenny Absher hanging six points behind Jason in third. The two Kingsport drivers have combined to win five of the first six races, Jason three and John two.In other classes, Billy Byington holds a three-point lead over Brandon Sutherland in the Rookie Pure 4 division, Jacob Owens leads Derek Lane by the same margin in Legends and Rocky Yates leads Bill Duty by five points in the Mod 4 division.Racing is scheduled to return to Kingsport Speedway next Friday night.
