Bristol's Andrew stars at AAC track meet

JOHNSON CITY — Shaka Andrew of Bristol, Va., was named the most outstanding male athlete in the 2013 Appalachian Athletic Conference outdoor track and field meet Thursday at Kermit Tipton Stadium. The Milligan College senior recorded a mark of 41.08 meters to capture the AAC men’s discus crown and broke the conference record in the shot put with a toss of 14.65 meters. Among other local athletes competing for Milligan, Kingsport’s Janie Smith finished second in women’s discus and fourth in the shot; Erwin’s Kristen Haun won the AAC title in the women’s high jump with a leap of 1.40 meters and was second in the 400 hurdles; Johnson City’s Danielle Mitchell and Natalia Rivas placed second and third, respectively, in the women’s 5K; and Kingsport’s Mackenzie Patten was runner-up in the 1,500-meter run. The Montreat men and Tennessee Wesleyan women claimed the team crowns.
