Union's Craft joins 13 new football recruits at Virginia-Wise

WISE — Former Union High School standout Cody Craft was among 13 football signees announced by Virginia-Wise last week, bringing to 26 the number of newcomers for coach Dewey Lusk’s team in its inaugural season in the Mountain East Conference.The 6-foot-2, 210-pound Craft was a two-sport star for the Bears. During his time at Union, he was an all-state award winner in addition to earning all-western section accolades. He was twice named all-district.The new group includes a pair of former prep stars at Floyd County High School: Dorian Harris and Tyler Vaught. Harris ran for 4,914 yards and 67 touchdowns and became the Buffaloes’ all-time leading rusher. The 5-11, 210-pound tailback garnered first-team all-district and second-team all-region honors following a senior season that saw him rush for 1,828 yards and 24 touchdowns.Vaught was a four-year starter on defense and a three-year starter on offense. Recruited as a defensive end, the 6-3, 200-pounder earned first-team all-district and second-team all-region status in 2012. Lynchburg, Va.’s Heritage also had two players sign with Virginia-Wise: defensive end Andrew Griffin and wide receiver I’Shantii Rosser, both three-year starters in high school.Griffin earned honorable mention all-state, first-team all-region and first-team all-district accolades following his senior campaign. The 6-2, 210-pounder also spent time at tight end for the Pioneers. Rosser was named first-team all-state, first-team all-region and first-team all-district this past season. The 5-11, 195-pounder also was a three-year starter at defensive back and a first-team all-district punter. Front Royal, Va.’s Skyline will send a pair of former players to Southwest Virginia as well. Fullback Chris Grady and tailback Dayvon Haight will wear Highland Cavaliers uniforms in 2013. The 5-10, 237-pound Grady was a three-sport athlete and a three-year starter on the football team at Skyline, also spending time on defense. He was a first-team all-district and first-team all-region selection in 2012. Haight played basketball in addition to football. The 6-foot, 175-pound tailback was a first-team all-region and first-team all-district honoree last season. Haight was a two-year starter at defensive back where he was also an all-district award winner. The week’s other signees were: • Timmy Meador of William Byrd, a 6-3, 230-pounder recruited as a linebacker who in high school was a three-year starter at tight end, a four-year starter at LB and the team’s long snapper. • Joemel Redd of Hampton, a 6-foot, 200-pound linebacker who was a two-sport athlete and a two-year starter at defensive end with a 4.7 time in the 40-yard dash. • Malcolm Revely of Amherst County, a 6-8, 175-pound linebacker for the Lancers.• Dylan McCormick of Fork Union Military Academy, a 6-1, 165-pound special teams standout as both a placekicker and punter. • Brandon McShine of Meadowbrook, a 5-8, 150-pound wide receiver.• Randy Kumah of Woodridge, a 6-1, 290-pound guard.Virginia-Wise's spring game is Saturday, April 20 at Carl Smith Stadium. The event is free and open to the public. The Cavs open the regular season Sept. 7 when they travel to Buies Creek, N.C., to face Campbell University.
