Two errors and a walk later, Bears ace Demi Reynolds coaxed Kendra Daugherty’s fly out to left to seal the 3-2 non-district victory for Union.
“That was nerve-wracking,” said Reynolds, a senior veteran who was last year’s Lonesome Pine District Player of the Year.
“We knew what we had to do to win here, because (Gate City) is ranked pretty high. It was a little rough at the end, but we did what we had to,” she said. Reynolds struck out seven Gate City batters. The Lady Blue Devils (4-2) also tested her mettle with seven hits.
Raymond and starting pitcher Caitlin McConnell had two hits apiece for Gate City, which left nine runners on base. Kasey Repass stroked a ground-rule double.
Jordan Lovelace personified the Lady Blue Devils’ newfound fighting spirit. After going 0-for-3 with a pair of strikeouts, she rapped into an error at shortstop that plated two Gate City runs in the seventh inning.
Gate City coach Cara Noe got a combined six innings of shutout softball from McConnell (2-1) and Repass in relief.
The Lady Blue Devils duo only allowed four hits.
Making the most of its limited opportunities, Union (3-0) exploited a Lady Blue Devils miscue on its way to a 3-0 lead in the fourth inning.
