Deluge of wrecks prompts Robert Pressley to end double file restarts at Kingsport Speedway

KINGSPORT — Track promoter Robert Pressley has eliminated Kingsport Speedway’s double file restarts in the Late Model division after Friday night’s marathon two hour 60-lap Late Model race in which nearly every car in competition was involved in a caution.

Kingsport Speedway public relations director Robert Walden posted on the Kingsport Speedway Facebook page Saturday that beginning this Friday Late models will restart single file, but all other divisions will continue double file restarts after caution periods.

The first 50 laps of Friday’s feature event were fairly clean, but the final 10 laps took more than an hour to complete as a result of wreck after wreck after wreck, most of which occurred on a caution period restart or shortly after the restart while cars were still bunched up.See the video race highlights posted below, as well as driver post race reaction.

Walden stated on Facebook, “I've been talking on the phone with Kingsport Speedway promoter Robert Pressley for about 40 minutes, with him leaving the track at close to 4 a.m. for the drive back home across the mountains to Asheville, N.C. From his perspective, it was a very aggravating night at the track with the Late Model Stock class.”

“He asked me to post and inform the Late Model Stock drivers and teams that beginning next Friday, April 5, the division will be going back to single-file restarts following cautions. “Robert Pressley and all the pit officials believe the Late Model Stock competitors' need to pay attention how the other divisions are able to handle double-file restarts without running all over the top of each other and tearing up equipment.

“Really, it's not the double-file restarts tearing up equipment. It's drivers' not using their heads and being overly aggressive and just running over other cars.”
