JOHNSON CITY — East Tennessee State’s Kerry Doane tossed a complete game for a 3-2 win in the opener but the Buccaneers failed to complete a ninth-inning comeback in the nightcap, losing 10-9 on Saturday in an Atlantic Sun Conference baseball doubleheader with Florida Gulf Coast at Thomas Stadium. Doane (4-1) kept the Eagles in check in the first game, giving up just two runs on six hits and two walks while striking out five. The senior right-hander, who recorded his third complete game in his past four starts, retired 12 of the final 13 batters. Center fielder Andrew Green finished with two hits, including the game winner with a two-out RBI double to left in the fifth. In the second game, the Bucs pushed two runs across in the bottom of the ninth to pull to within a run, but FGCU reliever Harrison Cooney struck out Dylan Tritsch on a 3-2 pitch with runners on second and third to end the game. Nick Rivera went 3-for-5 with a home run and two RBIs, Zack Tillery was 3-for-4 and Michael Suchy also homered for Gulf Coast (15-5, 2-1). Clinton Freeman, Tritsch, Chris Riopedre and Kevin Phillips had two hits apiece for ETSU (13-8, 3-3). Phillips knocked in three runs, Freeman plated two, and Riopedre smacked a two-run home run. The Bucs wrap up their homestand Tuesday against Radford at 7 p.m.
