Barton, Huffman, Watkins among DC-TC Relays stars

KINGSPORT — It was a meet to honor two legendary track coaches. Former Dobyns-Bennett coaches Dan Crowe and Tom Coughenour would have been proud to see more than 20 schools gather at the D-B track Saturday to compete for top honors.After the last baton was passed, the annual DC-TC/Texas Roadhouse Relays had once again produced some outstanding performances.Volunteer’s Sam Barton earned sprinter of the meet honors after victories in the 110-meter hurdles (15.04) and 300 hurdles (40.99). He also ran legs on the Falcons’ winning 4x100 relay (45.02) and their second-place finish in the 4x200 relay (1:32.86).“For this time of year, it was a good day,” Barton said. “With our relays we understand that we have the talent, so we’re putting in the extra work to compete with the best teams. We really want to be in the mix.”Virginia High’s Nik Huffman was the meet’s outstanding thrower after winning the shot put (55-6) and the discus (155-2). He is the defending VHSL Group A champion in both events.Tribe sophomore Bryce Ailshie and Science Hill’s Molly Foster were named co-distance runners for the meet. Foster was on the Lady Hilltoppers’ winning 4x800, 4x1,600 and distance medley relay teams. Ailshie ran on the D-B boys’ winning 4x800, distance medley and 4x400 relay teams.D-B’s Adriana Watkins earned the jumper of the meet award after winning the triple jump (36-4) and finishing third in the high jump (5-0).For the complete story, pick up a copy of Sunday’s Times-News.
