Lady 'Toppers blast D-B in Big 8 softball

KINGSPORT — The shifting wind played tricks on pitchers and outfielders alike at Indian Highland Park on Tuesday afternoon. Science Hill’s hitters were not troubled in the least. The Lady Hilltoppers cranked out nine hits — five of which were doubles — en route to an 8-2 Big 8 Conference softball win at Dobyns-Bennett. “It was a tough day to play with that wind. The wind was swirling and moving. It didn’t hurt us much, though,” said Science Hill coach Jerry Higgins. Two dropped fly balls that contributed to Science Hill’s final two runs in the sixth inning made Tuesday’s loss all the more unpalatable for D-B coach Andy Hubbard. The gusty crosswinds made both plays tough to read, but as far as Hubbard was concerned, that was no excuse. “We’ve hit fly balls after fly balls (to them) in the wind, out of the wind and everything else. We’ve got to make those plays. Science Hill made them,” said Hubbard, whose squad’s last opportunity for a comeback slipped away when it left three runners stranded in the fifth. For complete coverage of the game see the March 20 edition of the Times-News.
