Spartans turn back Bucs in Game 2

SPARTANBURG, S.C. — The East Tennessee State baseball team had its chances late in the game, but the Buccaneers dropped a 6-3 decision to USC Upstate on Saturday at Harley Park.The Bucs (11-5, 1-1 Atlantic Sun Conference) sent the tying run to the plate in both the eighth and ninth innings, but couldn’t complete the comeback. ETSU, which stranded 13 baserunners, fell behind 5-0 after four innings before clawing back against the Spartans (11-6, 1-1). Andrew Green’s RBI single in the fifth got the Bucs on the scoreboard and Derek Niesman drove in two more runs with a two-out double in the seventh.Chad Sobotka earned a four-out save to secure the win for David Roseboom (4-0), who allowed just one run on five hits and fanned six in six innings of work.The Bucs’ Kerry Doane (3-1) suffered his first loss of the season. The senior right-hander allowed six runs, five of them earned, on 11 hits in six innings. His consecutive scoreless innings streak ended at 20 when he surrendered an RBI single in the first.Green and Jeremy Taylor had three hits each for ETSU. Jonesborough native Clinton Freeman reached base three times — two walks and a single — to extend to 19 the number of games in which he has reached base safely.The series finale is set for 1 p.m. on Sunday.
