D-B sweeps Gate City in tennis opener

KINGSPORT — The high school tennis season started off with a bang Tuesday when Gate City crossed the state line to do battle with Dobyns-Bennett. It was two of the top tennis programs in Northeast Tennessee and Southwest Virginia going head to head. In the end, the D-B girls upended the Lady Blue Devils 6-3 while the Indians slipped by Gate City 5-4 in the boys’ competition. Gate City’s girls are coming off a VHSL Group A state championship, their seventh state title since 2003. The Lady Blue Devils’ Rosa Smith, now a sophomore, finished second in the state singles competition last year. D-B’s Lady Indians were the runners-up in the TSSAA Class AAA state team tournament last season. Josie Rogers, now just a sophomore, was second in the state singles tournament.For complete coverage of the matches see the March 13 edition of the Times-News.
