Kingsport's Kilgore to drop green flag at BMS

BRISTOL, Tenn. — One of our own will be the honorary starter for Sunday’s Sprint Cup Series race at Bristol Motor Speedway.Kingsport native Daniel Kilgore, an offensive lineman for the San Francisco 49ers, will wave the green flag for the Food City 500 at BMS.The 6-foot-3, 308-pound Kilgore, a high school football star at Dobyns-Bennett, is looking forward to taking part in the prestigious event.“It’s a very big honor to come to my home track and start the Food City 500 at the World’s Fastest Half-Mile,” Kilgore said in a release from Food City. “I’m very excited about it. I’ve been to every spring race — I grew up coming there. I actually worked the races, selling programs for Dobyns-Bennett, so to go from selling programs to starting the race is pretty awesome. I’m really looking forward to it.”The 25-year-old Kilgore played college football for Appalachian State from 2006-2010. In 2011, he was drafted in the fifth round by the 49ers. He appeared in all 18 games last season and became only the second former Appalachian State player to play in a Super Bowl.Steve C. Smith, president and chief executive officer of Food City, is looking forward to having Kilgore wave the green flag to signal the start of the Food City 500.“We are excited about the upcoming race weekend and we’re especially honored to have one of our region’s own representing our company as Honorary Starter of the Food City 500,” Smith said. “Kilgore is a tremendous asset to his team and our entire region and I’m proud to have him as our guest.”The Food City 500 gets under way at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
