Girls BasketballSullivan East 54, Unicoi County 52ELIZABETHTON — The Sullivan East girls basketball team went on a 24-4 run late in the game to overcome a huge deficit and beat Unicoi County on Monday in the District-1-AA consolation game at Elizabethton High School.The Lady Patriots (20-10) will be at South Greene on Friday in the Region 2-AA quarterfinals. Unicoi County (17-11) will travel to undefeated and No. 1-ranked Grainger.Savanna Summers hit a jumper to put East ahead 52-50 with 37 seconds left. Unicoi’s Chelsey Harness answered with two free throws with 26 seconds remaining.East tried to hold for the last shot, and Brandy Watkins was fouled with 6.2 seconds to go. The freshman made two free throws, and Unicoi turned over the ball as time expired.The Lady Patriots were able to keep going even after the big comeback.“I think we were playing hard the whole game,” said East coach Allan Aubrey. “So when we got over the hump, it allowed us to just keep playing the way we were.” Summers led East with 14 points and Watkins totaled 12. Brittany Scott had a huge effort on the boards with 15 rebounds.Unicoi County was led by Emily Edwards’ 14 points, and Chelsey Harness added 12. Destinie Hayes pounded the glass for 16 rebounds.In the championship game, Elizabethton downed Happy Valley 53-42 to clinch a No. 1 seed. The Lady Cyclones (24-4) will host West Greene while the Lady Warriors host Chuckey-Doak.Lee 53, Eastside 40COEBURN — Samantha Ely scored 16 points to lead Lee High to an opening-round upset of seventh-seeded Eastside in their Region D, Division 2 tournament game at Coeburn Middle School.Kelsey Scaggs added 10 points for the No. 10 Lady Generals (8-16), who travel to Gate City Tuesday night for a quarterfinal game with the No. 2 Lady Blue Devils.The Lady Spartans got off to a slow start and couldn’t recover, shooting just 1-for-17 in the first quarter and falling behind 12-3. Lindsay Dean scored 10 points to lead Eastside (14-9), which played at various locations this season while waiting for its home gym to be finished.
