George Thwaites • Feb 16, 2013 at 7:08 AM

Ty Ryans is wrapping up his senior year at Cherokee as the Big Mobuck on Campus. The 6-foot-5, 190-pound Ryans enjoyed a gridiron career with the Chiefs that was nothing short of spectacular. He is the greatest quarterback in the school’s history, having passed for more than 7,000 yards with only five interceptions. This year alone, Ryans threw for 2,320 yards and 23 scoring strikes. He also rushed for 734 yards and seven touchdowns. During basketball season, Ryans led Cherokee in scoring with an average of 15.2 points per game. He has scored more than 1,400 career points for the Chiefs, a stint that saw him lead Cherokee to the 2012 TSSAA basketball tournament in Murfreesboro. Next fall, the IMAC’s offensive player of the year on the gridiron will suit up for Virginia-Wise, which signed him to a football scholarship. He had some basketball offers but stayed with the game he finds the most fun. “I just enjoy being on the field with a group of guys. I feel that I can impact the game of football more than I can basketball,” Ryans said. “The number one thing is that I feel like I’d get to play more with football than with basketball.”Times-News sports writer George Thwaites recently caught up with Ryans for a short Q&A.
