Castlewood, Eastside in CD boys final

EWING, Va. — Castlewood and Eastside took care of business on Thursday in the Cumberland District boys tournament semifinals at Thomas Walker.The Spartans used a 24-2 run to blow open the game and subdue Thomas Walker 68-51. In the nightcap, Castlewood jumped on to 13-3 and never looked back, cruising to an 82-62 win over Rye Cove. The Blue Devils (16-5) will meet Eastside (10-12) at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday at Thomas Walker in the championship game. The Pioneers (7-16) and Eagles (9-15) play in the consolation game at 3:30.Eastside and Thomas Walker were locked in a tense battle with neither team able to gain an advantage. The Spartans led 23-21 with 1:32 left in the first half when the Pioneers closed out the quarter on a 6-0 run to move on top 27-23.Eastside opened the third quarter with a 9-4 run and slipped ahead 32-31. Thomas Walker’s Justin Catron drained a 3-pointer with 4:45 left in the period and put his team back in front, 34-32.From that point on, it was all Eastside, and Ryan Milgrim in particular. Milgrim scored 14 points in the last four minutes of the quarter and the Spartans were comfortably ahead 51-36 to start the fourth period.“There’s no doubt that the third period was the key,” said Eastside coach Patrick Damron. “Milgrim did what he does best. He got hot and we rode him hard.”Thomas Walker coach Adam Hood had a simple assessment of how the game got away from his team.“We lost our composure,” said Hood. “We had a couple of calls go against us and instead of using that as a challenge we took it personal.”Milgrim finished with 22 points to lead Eastside while Forest Lunsford and Wes Yeary added 13 points each.Catron and Justin Green had 11 points apiece for the Pioneers.Led by Reid Edmonds’ 28 points, Castlewood placed five players in double figures in the nightcap.After trailing by as many as 13 points in the second quarter, Rye Cove refused to surrender and got within seven with 3:04 left in the half.But the Blue Devils quelled the uprising by outscoring the Eagles 23-8 over the next nine minutes to take an insurmountable 55-33 lead.“We had good intensity tonight,” said Castlewood coach Doug Campbell. “The fast start set the tone for the rest of the game.”Dylan Trent added 16 points and 10 rebounds for the Devils with Ben Couch scoring 15, Tyler Austin 13 and Dakota Grizzel 10. Edmonds and Trent had 10 boards each while Austin dished out 10 assists.Luke Rhoten and Uriah Addison had 17 points each to lead Rye Cove. Hunter McMahan added 11.
