Boone, Science Hill win in District 1-AAA girls

GRAY — Postseason basketball in Tennessee began with a bang on Monday night at Daniel Boone.In the quarterfinals of the District 1-AAA girls tournament, No. 5 Boone pulled off a mild upset of No. 4 Sullivan South. The Lady Trailblazers jumped out to an early 7-0 lead and kept the Lady Rebels at bay the rest of the game to come away with a 64-52 victory.No. 1 seed Science Hill showed why it’s one of the top teams in the nation with a 105-30 win over eighth-seeded David Crockett.The Lady Hilltoppers (27-3) will take on the Lady ’Blazers (16-11) on Friday at 7:30 p.m. in the semifinals, also at Boone.After falling behind 7-0 in the first quarter, South (17-11) made a run at the Lady ’Blazers. A 3-point goal by Taylor Crawford with 2:11 left in the period brought the Lady Rebels to within three, 12-9.But by the start of the second quarter, Boone had moved ahead 18-11. Despite missing 10 free throws over the first two periods, the Lady Trailblazers held a 31-17 lead at the half.The Lady Rebels went on an 8-0 run to open the second half, bringing the deficit down to 31-23, but Boone responded and was up 42-29 with 2:40 left in the third quarter.South managed to get within seven, 44-37, only to see Boone go on an 11-2 run and take a 55-39 lead with 4:54 left in the game.From there, South put the Lady ’Blazers on the charity stripe. They hit only 12 of 23 free throws down the stretch but managed to seal the win.Boone hit just 50 percent (21-of-42) of its free throws in the game.Science Hill’s smothering full-court press forced turnover after turnover and produced a stunning 42-2 lead after the opening period against the Lady Pioneers (3-28).The remaining girls quarterfinals will be played tonight at Boone. No. 6 Volunteer meets No. 3 Dobyns-Bennett at 6 followed by No. 2 Tennessee High taking on No. 7 Sullivan Central at 7:30.For complete coverage of the game see the Feb. 12 edition of the Times-News.
