Eastside senior Samantha Cole doesn’t worry about what to do with her spare time. She doesn’t have all that much spare time to worry about. She’s been a four-sport athlete since her freshman year. “It’s not with ease. Between school and sports, I wear myself out. But my body is used to it,” said Cole, who is a guard in basketball, a setter in volleyball, a shortstop in softball, and a sprinter and relay team runner in track and field. Adding to the workload is that girls athletics at Eastside (and prior to consolidation, Coeburn) habitually have spilled over into the postseasons in all sports. Cole has played for a state title on the Eastside volleyball team and helped bring home a state championship in softball. She’s been to the VHSL Group A track and field championships in Radford three times. Softball is by far her favorite sport. She moved from the outfield to shortstop as a freshman and she’s been there ever since. Softball is the sport she is most likely play at the college level. She’s being courted by Pikeville, King College and Virginia Intermont, and lately Tusculum has been looking into her skills. She’d like to major in physical therapy but so far (knock wood) has never required it as an athlete. “I’m just interested in all the stuff that has to do with the body,” she said. Times-News Sports Writer George Thwaites caught up with Samantha recently for a few questions. Here’s what she had to say: Who is your favorite athlete? Right now it’s probably Ray Allen. He’s old as dirt, but he’s still my favorite. I just think he’s a good leader. I always liked him when he was at the Celtics and now he went with the Heat and I don’t share that love as much. But he’s still my favorite athlete. You don’t like the Heat? I don’t like the Heat at all. I don’t like LeBron James. What’s your favorite movie? Probably “Due Date.” I’m all about funny movies. I really love to laugh. What is your best athletic memory? Winning the state championship in softball. I was the only scoring run. What is your worst athletic memory? Losing the state championship in volleyball. In a movie about your life, who would play you? Jennifer Lopez. If you were hosting a dinner party, who would be your three ideal dinner guests? It’s going to be Will Ferrell, Oprah Winfrey and Jonah Hill. Oprah will fit in with them, hopefully. Who is your favorite superhero? I like Spider-Man. I just love how he’s so secretive. He’s got a secret life. He can shoot stuff out of his hands and go from tower to tower. And he’s such a nice guy.Do you have any superstitions or pregame rituals? This is nasty, but I’m all about not washing my socks in softball. I do not like washing them. I like wearing the same ones over and over. I just try to put them somewhere to air out until the next game. Do you have a nickname? Sam. What’s your favorite non-sports activity? I like to sing. I’m in our high school a capella group. Did you like the television show “Glee?” No, I didn’t like that. So what’s your favorite song? “Locked Out of Heaven” by Bruno Mars.
