GATE CITY — Sullivan South is quietly going about its business this season. That business now includes an impressive victory over the reigning VHSL Group A, Division 2 girls basketball runners-up. Kayla Tipton scored 17 points to highlight an offense that was as efficient as it was pleasing to the eye, and the Lady Rebels pulled away from Gate City in the second half of a 58-51 interstate win. Tipton added four blocks and was a force on the glass for South (9-1). The Lady Rebels’ only defeat thus far is to nationally ranked Science Hill. Gate City (3-3) found a way into the contest during the second period behind Morgan Gose, scorer of a game-high 20 points. The Lady Blue Devils turned to Gose again in the third and trailed by just two, 36-34, early in the quarter before unraveling.
In the boys' game, the Rebels raced to a 11-0 lead three minutes into the contest, and took a 17-9 advantage into the second. Then came the nightmare.South managed just two points in the second period (off a pair of foul shots), followed it up after halftime with a tepid six-point third, and slumped to a 58-45 defeat, its second in as many days.
