Unseasonably warm days following cold nights have resulted in excellent conditions for smallmouth fishing in the Holston River in Kingsport, local guide Randy Ratliff said.Water temperatures in the river have ranged from 56 degrees to as warm as 58 degrees later in the afternoon. Smallmouth bass in the river are feeding aggressively, fattening themselves for the winter.Ratliff, who runs Troutfishers Guide Service in Kingsport has gotten reports from anglers all over the river, from the low-water dam in the Chemical Alley section of the river in the midst of the Tennessee Eastman campus, on downstream of the Holston Army Ammunition Plant.Ratliff said he and fellow guide Josh Pfeiffer saw plenty of evidence of what these fish were feeding on so voraciously. Ironically enough, the fly upon which they were catching the most fish was not the fly he would have expected.
