CLINCHPORT — The graduation of 1,000-point scorer Kaysey Williams left a points deficit the Sullivan North girls basketball team has had a hard time collectively making up.

In the meantime, Shania Leonard is doing what she can to help the Lady Golden Raiders compete.

Leonard scored 18 points, including the game-winning bucket, as North edged Rye Cove 33-32 in a non-conference contest.

“We knew that when we lost Kaysey that Shania was going to have to step up for us. She takes care of the ball for us 90 percent of the time. She’s the team leader. And both wins we’ve got are on her shoulders,” said North coach Jim Barker.

The junior guard was frequently the focal point of Rye Cove’s aggressive ball-pressuring tactics, giving her the opportunity to go 10-for-15 at the free throw line. She also hit a pair of 3-pointers for the Raiders.
