Sullivan South senior baseball player Jamin McCann says hard work pays off.Recently he reaped the rewards for all the time and effort he has put into playing baseball. McCann signed with East Tennessee State University to continue his baseball career with the Bucs. “It was an easy decision for me,” McCann said. “I just like the way the coaches at ETSU went about things. That’s what caught my eye.” A career .350 hitter for the Rebels, McCann thinks he’ll have an opportunity to play multiple positions at ETSU. “They’ll have me pitch,” said McCann, a left-hander. “But they also talked about me playing in the outfield and having a chance to do a little hitting. I think they want players who are versatile.” McCann has also given some thought to what he will study at ETSU. “I’ll start with exercise science,” he said. “If that doesn’t work out, I’m thinking about something in engineering.” Before he heads to ETSU, McCann still has some unfinished business at South. “We think we’ll have a pretty good team this spring,” he said. “Our goal is to win the district. That would be a great way to finish my career here at South.“It’s amazing how fast the time has gone by,” McCann added. “I’m really looking forward to my senior season.” In an interview with Times-News executive sports editor Pat Kenney, McCann gave a little more insight into what makes him tick. Here's what he had to say: Who is your favorite athlete? That would have to be Brian McCann. What is your favorite movie? For sure it’s “Rocky.”What is your best athletic memory?Probably beating Dobyns-Bennett in our first game last season. I got to pitch. Winning that game is something I’ll remember the rest of my life. What is your worst athletic memory? When we lost to Science Hill last year. It was probably the worst game I’ve pitched in my life. Everybody has days like that, but I hated it just the same.In a movie made about your life, who would play you?Sylvester StalloneIf you were hosting a dinner party, who would be your three ideal guests? Can I say four? First it would be my mom, dad and mamaw. I’d also like to have my papaw there. He’s in heaven right now but I’d like to have him there with us.If you could have a superpower, what would it be?Super strength
Do you have any superstitions? Before I go to the plate I take a long look at my bat. It’s just something I’ve always done. But I’m not really very superstitious.Do you have a nickname? They call me Jamal. What advice do you have for players just starting out their high school careers?Listen to your coaches, they know how to play the game. Listen to the upperclassmen, they’ve been through it all. And work as hard as you can all the time. Even though you might not be playing a lot, the coaches see who is putting in the effort. Just keep working hard and it will get noticed and you’ll get your chance to play.
