KINGSPORT — Last year when J.I. Burton headed south for a season-opening benefit game at Gate City, the Raiders expected matchup issues from a couple of guys named Arnold.Friday night at Sullivan North, one Arnold was trouble enough.Chase Arnold scored 27 points and the Golden Raiders finally got their basketball legs under them in an 81-64 win over the visiting Norton squad.“We clicked tonight. Pushing the ball, getting boards and playing good defense,” said Arnold, who also had 11 rebounds and six steals, handing out two assists.Friday’s game was the first win for North (1-3), which got its full squad together late because of the Golden Raiders’ deep football playoff run. Nowadays, early Hall of Fame losses are counted in a team’s official record.Under Virginia rules, Burton gets to write the loss off as a benefit scrimmage. Norton probably deserved the benefit of the doubt, given that its Raiders had their first full-squad practice on Wednesday because of postseason football. For complete coverage of the game pick up a copy of the Dec. 1 Times-News.
