KINGSPORT — Dobyns-Bennett halfback Devaun Swafford practically owned the end zone at J. Fred Johnson Stadium on Friday night in a 35-7 first-round Class 6A playoff win over Bearden. He scored four touchdowns on runs of 30, 7 and 2 yards and a 43-yard TD pass from quarterback Malik Foreman. The 176-pound senior rushed 14 times for 147 yards. That was just his offense. Now to Swafford’s defense. He recovered a fumble in the end zone to stop a scoring threat by ninth-ranked Bearden (8-3) with 8:39 showing in the first quarter. With 30 seconds left to play in that same quarter, he intercepted a pass in the end zone. With 9:30 remaining in the game, he broke up a pass play in the end zone. One play in particular by Swafford had spectators scratching their heads. He ran a sweep to the left with two defenders hanging on him. Swafford kept pushing horizontally until he landed on the end zone flag for a 7-yard TD. “Whichever way Devaun wants to run — sideways or forward — I’m not saying anything,” D-B coach Graham Clark said. Unbeaten D-B (11-0) will be hosting Sevier County in the second round next Friday. For complete coverage of the game, see the Nov. 3 edition of the Times-News.
