After Gate City’s loss to Clintwood, Blue Devils football coach Bill Houseright said any power ratings scenario that might put his team into the playoffs seemed “farfetched.” Early on in Friday’s showdown with the second-ranked Greenwave, a season-ending win for the Blue Devils didn’t seem all that outlandish. Gate City’s offense kept things interesting until a sack and a couple of interceptions put Clintwood in the driver’s seat for a 56-28 win at Legion Field.“The first half really worried me. They came out and they were killing us with the run and the pass and everything they tried to do,” said Clintwood running back Gavan Meade, who rushed for 190 yards on 15 carries, scoring four touchdowns.Gate City quarterback Nick Bowen passed for 304 yards with three scoring strikes. He had 216 yards passing in the first half. With the Green D spread out all over the place, running back Evan Baker surprised the Greenwave with 88 of his 103 yards rushing in the first act.
