Union Bears maul Gate City 55-27

GATE CITY — In this modern era of wide-open offenses that are generating basketball-type scores, the old-fashioned split-T backfield has almost become obsolete.

However, Union football coach Travis Turner isn’t about to give it up. He’s making the full-house attack work with the “Three Horsemen of Big Stone Gap.”

The way the Bears utilize it speaks volume for the old-school, conservative approach.

Halfbacks Jake McCray and Mekyah Davis and fullback Ben Baugh combined to rush for 380 yards Friday night in a 55-27 victory over Gate City.

McCray carried the ball nine times for 159 yards and four touchdowns. Baugh gained 136 yards on 22 runs. Davis got 85 yards with 10 assignments.
