Science Hill senior Martha McCoy has run varsity cross country for the Lady Hilltoppers for the past four seasons. With each and every stride, she has established herself as not only one of the top runners in Northeast Tennessee but also one of the best in the state. This season, McCoy won the prestigious Bluegrass Invitational at the Johnson City VA. and captured the Big 8 Conference individual crown at Steele Creek Park.Recently, she answered some questions from Times-News executive sports editor Pat Kenney. Here are her responses:Who is your favorite athlete, past or present?I always have had a crazy obsession with Shalane Flannagan, who is a 10K runner. And I’ve always looked up to Allie Scalf, a former runner at Science Hill. What is your favorite movie?"She’s the Man."What is your best athletic memory?Probably first year we were runner-up at the state cross country meet. I finished in the top 10 and that was so much fun. What is your worst athletic memory? Two years ago I had a real bad Trailblazer race and passed out.
If you were hosting a dinner party, who would be your three ideal guests?Jesus, Jim Carrey - he’d make it interesting - and Coach (Jennifer) Brockett. I’d have to invite her or she’d be jealous. I don’t want her to get mad at me.
In a movie made about your life, who would play you?It would have to be somebody really crazy. I would probably hire Molly Foster because she knows me so well.
If you could have one super power, what would it be?To fly.Do you have any superstitions?I just don’t believe in things like that. Do you have a nickname?Actually nothing rhymes with Martha, but I’m the nickname queen and give everyone else nicknames. What advice do you have for younger runners just starting out in cross country?Just to know that nothing is ever set in stone. Even when it’s really a low moment not to forget it’s still about the team. Don’t get discouraged if you don’t run good times, just do your best to help the team.
