MORRISTOWN — The upstart hung tough, but experience won out on Monday night in the title game of the Region 1-AAA volleyball tournament at Morristown West.

After rolling through their District 2 competition in the semifinals, Sullivan South and Science Hill staged an epic rematch of the District 1 title game with the Region 1 crown hanging in the balance.

South prevailed 28-26, 21-25, 23-25, 26-24, 15-11 to defend its regional title and secure a home sectional match on Thursday.

Even though the match went the distance, Game 1 might have been the difference. South rallied from a 20-18 deficit to win that game, allowing the Lady Rebels to stay alive despite losing Games 2 and 3.

“It would have been really easy for us to fold if we had lost Game 1,” said South coach Wendy Ratliff. “It could have changed our whole mentality.”

South will host the Region 2 runner-up on Thursday at 7 p.m. Science Hill must travel to meet the Region 2 champion. The Region 2 title game will be played Tuesday night.
