GREENEVILE — Sullivan North volleyball coach Debby Booher doesn’t know what reclassification holds in store for the Lady Golden Raiders next year. But she was acutely aware that her team was outclassed by South Greene’s talent Tuesday night. “They probably have more athletes on that team than we have in our whole school. They’ve got them, buddy, and they use them,” said Booher, whose program’s sixth straight trip to the regionals ended in all-too-familiar fashion. The District 2-AA champions got sterling performances from hitters Maelynn Cutshaw and Alora Ricker to pound out a 25-18, 25-13, 25-15 win that eliminated North in the opening round of the Region 1-AA tournament at South Greene High School. Cutshaw was a beast at the end, unloading 13 of her match-leading 26 kills in the third set. “There were a couple of times I thought they should have gone to her more because she was hitting it so well. But that’s a decision they have to make on the floor,” said South Greene coach Stephen Gregg, whose squad went on to win the tournament by beating Sullivan East 25-23, 17-25, 25-17, 25-19 in the championship game. Both East (27-19) and South Greene (28-6) advance to Thursday’s 7 p.m. sectional matches. MacKenzie Sumpter had eight kills to lead North (19-12) and Hannah Dingus had seven kills. Setter Jordan Ryans distributed 20 assists. East advanced to the finals with a 25-20, 25-14, 25-13 win over West Greene (27-10).For the complete story, pick up a copy of the Oct. 17 edition of the Times-News.
