Burkett goal lifts D-B over South in 1-AAA soccer

KINGSPORT — There are certain character traits required for one to excel in a soccer match between Dobyns-Bennett and Sullivan South. At the top of the list is a fiery disposition. Fortunately for the Tribe, Erin Burkett is a fiery individual — on the pitch and off. The sophomore, somewhat of a footballing zealot, set up the Lady Indians’ opening goal on Tuesday night. She then, to open the second half, took a knee to the midsection, forcing her out of the contest. Not one to allow injury to hinder her contribution, Burkett returned swiftly. And then, midway through the half, settled matters between these city rivals. Burkett launched herself at a Carollyn Anders crossing pass on 55 minutes, her beautiful leaping header at the back post securing a 2-1 win for second-seeded D-B in the nightcap of the District 1-AAA girls tournament semifinal round at Indian Highland Park. “It was all about the team’s effort, really,” Burkett said. “I just was the one to finish it.”Burkett’s superb headed goal ensured the district tournament championship match featured the usual suspects — the Lady Indians (9-8-3) and Science Hill. D-B will host the Lady Hilltoppers (12-3-3) on Thursday at 6 p.m. Top-seeded Science Hill booked its place in the final via a 4-0 victory over Daniel Boone in Tuesday’s opening semifinal.
