BIG STONE GAP — Galax senior John Bryant is trying to make the VHSL Group A golf tournament a family affair. In wretched conditions Monday at Lonesome Pine Country Club, Bryant shot a 2-under-par 34 to take a three-shot lead over Korey Watts of James River and Ryan Hyatt of Virginia High. The first round of the two-day event was shortened to nine holes because of rain and the course conditions. Today’s final round is scheduled for 18 holes. In the team competition, James River survived the weather and posted a team total of 169 for a one-stroke advantage over William Monroe (170). Virginia High (172) was third and Wise Central (174) fourth.Doug Bryant, John’s father, won Group A golf titles in 1975 and ’77 and was a runner-up in ’76. John’s brother Sam captured the individual crown in 2005.“They never talk much about their winning the state,” John Bryant said. “But I always had it in my mind to win this tournament.”Nick England’s 39, which put him in a four-way tie for eighth, helped keep Wise Central near the top of the leaderboard heading into the final round.Today’s final round begins at 8:30 a.m. with the leaders teeing off at 10:30.For the complete story, pick up a copy of the Oct. 9 edition of the Times-News.
