Player Profile: Emily Williams

Sullivan Central senior Emily Williams didn’t start running cross country until her sophomore year. But she has really made up for lost time.Last year, Williams won every race she entered until finishing 10th at the TSSAA Class AAA state meet.She has started strong again this year with a victory in the Run Fer the Hills meet at Holston Dam and her third straight victory in the Raider Run at Sullivan North.Williams also recently was named Homecoming queen at Central.In a Q&A with Times-News executive sports editor Pat Kenney, Williams answered some questions about her life away from running.
Who is your favorite athlete?Wilma Rudolph.What is your favorite movie? “Remember the Titans.”What is your best athletic memory?Our girls team qualifying for last year’s state cross country meet.What is your worst athletic memory?Finishing 10th at the state meet. I know I can do better.In a movie made about your life, who would play you?My friend Maria Long, she would be a much cooler version of me.If you hosted a dinner party and could invite any three people, who would they be?Sir Isaac Newton, my best friend is majorly into physics so he wouldn’t be able to lecture me anymore. George Washington Carver, he set such a good example for standing up for what you believe in. He wasn’t afraid to be controversial. And poet Shel Silverstein.If you could have a superpower, what would it be?To have super speed.Do you have any superstitions?No peanut butter and jelly sandwiches the day of a race and always double- and triple-knot my shoe laces.Do you have a nickname?Some people call me Em.What advice do you have for younger runners just starting out?Don’t put too much pressure on yourself. Run because you love it. When you get nervous, think about what keeps you running. Just try to have fun each and every day.
