KINGSPORT — A long Saturday at Sullivan South’s Pick-O-Dixie volleyball tournament didn’t look like it was going to end well for the Lady Rebels.Looks can be deceiving.South got 17 kills from explosive outside hitter Tristen Pennington and the Lady Rebels posted a 21-26, 26-24, 15-9 comeback victory over Hardin Valley Academy in the championship match.South (29-6) has won four straight Pick-O-Dixie championships.“Tristen has played like that all day. Honestly, I think this is the best I’ve seen her play, She hit it down the line, crosscourt. She really mixes it up,” said Lady Rebels coach Wendy Ratliff, whose team trailed 12-5 in the first game of the final before clawing back into contention. The Hawks (40-10) got seven kills from Katie Wagner and six from Taniesha Crockett, whose clutch block for game point sealed the first game for Hardin Valley. In bracket play, South beat Tennessee High 25-12, 25-17 in the quarterfinals, advancing to eliminate Anderson County 14-25, 25-23, 15-13 in the semifinals. Hardin Valley fought off scrappy Sullivan Central 25-20, 23-25, 15-10 in the quarters and knocked off Sullivan East 25-21, 27-25 in the semis.
