KINGSPORT — A long winter spent turning laps and turning wrenches put Nate Monteith ahead of the curve by the time the 2011 NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Late Model season kicked off at Kingsport Speedway this spring. But as the summer started heating up, so did the competition. Lee Tissot and Daniel Pope II have been busy eating into Monteith’s points lead as they’ve learned more about the tricky concrete bullring with each passing week. While preparing for last Friday’s race, Monteith admitted feeling the pressure. But as a racer who loves a challenge, he wouldn’t have it any other way. “I think we’ve still got an edge, it just might not be as much as it was to begin with,” he said. “That’s the way I like it. I would rather make this a challenge and make us have to work hard. “I want to win as much as I can — don’t get me wrong — but I like it being tight. I like for us to have to work for it.”
