BRISTOL, Tenn. — Once night fell on Bristol Dragway, defending NHRA Top Fuel champion Larry Dixon rose to the occasion.

Rain delayed the final eliminations by four hours, setting up a duel under the lights between Dixon and Antron Brown with the Top Fuel title at the Ford Thunder Valley Nationals hanging in the balance. Dixon edged Brown by nine-thousandths of a second to pick up his first victory of the 2011 season and his sixth career win on Father’s Day.

Robert Hight captured the Funny Car victory and Mike Edwards got his season back on track with a win in the Pro Stock division to cap off a wild Sunday in Thunder Valley.

Dixon snapped Spencer Massey’s two-race winning streak by beating the rookie in the semifinals. He followed up that narrow victory by winning a side-by-side battle against Brown, who had advanced to the final by defeating three-time defending race winner Tony Schumacher in the semis.

Dixon’s 3.836 ET was just enough to best Brown’s time of 3.851 after Brown beat him off the starting line.
