JONESBOROUGH — In a classic example of slow and steady wins the race, Jackson’s Rachel Deaton sent a shockwave across the field at the 71st annual Tennessee Women’s Amateur at Blackthorn Club at the Ridges.

Deaton, in a steady, grinding fashion, upset defending champion Calle Nielson 5 and 3 in Wednesday’s Round of 16.

“Honestly, I went into the match thinking there’s always a slim chance I could win,’’ said Deaton, who plays collegiately at Austin Peay. “My plan was to just keep hitting fairways and greens and hope for the best.’’

And the best is just what Deaton got. On a day when Nielson was not on top of her game, the last opponent she needed in match play was a grinder.
