For 17 years, Bo Burton and Derek Trent played hundreds of games together, starring on baseball diamonds ranging from local youth leagues to ballparks throughout the Atlantic Sun Conference.
By choice and chance, they always managed to land on the same teams, beginning with T-ball at age 4½ in the Eastman recreation program and continuing through their Dobyns-Bennett and East Tennessee State careers.
At age 22, they still haven’t gone their separate ways but are preparing for life after baseball. Both have been assigned to do student teaching in the fall at Sullivan South High School and plan to become coaches.
Meanwhile, Trent anxiously awaits Major League Baseball’s first-year player draft, scheduled for Monday. Close observers feel the 6-foot-2, 210-pound catcher will be chosen in the early rounds.
