BRISTOL, Va. — According to Wikipedia, “Bearcat” is another name for an Asian mammal known as a “binturong.” It’s also a colloquial term for a North American wolverine or mountain lion. Not one of which is a related species.

Whatever actual or semi-mythical critter signifies the imagined mascot of Virginia High’s baseball team, one thing is apparent. It isn’t a timid animal.

A typically aggressive approach to the basepaths carried the day for the Bearcats on Saturday night as they edged Gate City 4-3 in the Clinch Mountain District baseball tournament final at Boyce Cox Field.

Both teams will have home games in Tuesday’s opening round of the Region D, Division 2 tournament.

The Bearcats (17-5) stole five bases despite the vigilance of cannon-armed Blue Devils catcher Derrick Miller, who gunned down runners with felonious intent in the third and fourth innings.
