Coeburn, Castlewood to meet for Cumberland District softball title

CASTLEWOOD — One spectacular burst of offense was enough to put Castlewood’s softball team into this evening’s Cumberland District championship game.

The Lady Blue Devils put up five runs in the second inning and held on to earn a 5-3 victory over Rye Cove on Thursday in the Cumberland semifinals.

Castlewood’s swiftness on the basepaths combined with a few timely hits and a fielding error by Rye Cove helped the Lady Blue Devils turn a 1-0 deficit into a 5-1 lead.

“We’ve got a pretty good baserunning team and we capitalized on their mistakes in the second inning,” Castlewood coach Barry Ruff said. “Five runs — that’s all we had and we needed every one of them.”
