WISE — Wednesday was a historic day at the Region D tennis tournament at Virginia-Wise.

For the first time in school history, Lee High qualified for the VHSL Group A state tournament. The Generals swept the boys’ finals, winning the Region D team title with a 5-0 victory over Castlewood. Lee’s Marc Huff rolled to a 6-0, 6-0 win over Castlewood’s Greg Kiser in the singles final and then Huff teamed with partner Tyler Tindell to beat Kiser and Aaron Mullins 6-0, 6-0 in the doubles championship.

The J.J. Kelly girls earned a return trip to the state tournament for the first time since 1999. The Lady Indians, who beat defending state champion Gate City in the semifinals, punched their ticket to state with a 5-0 win over Coeburn.

Although not returning as a team, the Lady Blue Devils did pick up two solid Region D titles.
