JOHNSON CITY — Science Hill moved a step closer to earning the Big 8 Conference’s top-seeded position for the District 1 baseball tournament.

The Hilltoppers (22-8, 11-2) defeated Sullivan South (12-6, 7-4) by a 15-5 margin Tuesday night, with the 10-run mercy rule being applied after one out in the sixth inning.

South coach Anthony Richardson held out ace pitcher Heath Haden after penciling him in as the starter on his lineup card. Instead, he sent out Ryan Burrow to face the Hilltoppers’ bats.

When Science Hill’s leadoff batter, Zach Thompson, legged out an infield hit, Richardson changed his mind and switched to Tyler Troutman. Science Hill never let Troutman get tuned in, striking for a 7-0 lead in the first inning.
