The trial of a Kingsport man accused of raping a 4-year-old female relative has been postponed due to a pending mental health evaluation.Steven D. Pippin, 28, 622 Beulah Church Road, Kingsport, is charged with a single count of rape of a child. The charge stems from an incident alleged to have occurred between May 2009 and November 2009.In Sullivan County Criminal Court on Wednesday, the judge told Steven Dale Pippin he had to postpone his May 4 trial because a mental health evaluation is still pending.Sullivan County Assistant Public Defender Andy Kennedy had requested Pippin undergo an evaluation to determine his competency to stand trial and mental status at the time of the alleged offense. The judge advised Pippin the evaluation could not be scheduled until May 3, which is the day before his trial was scheduled to begin. As a result, Pippin's trial was taken off the docket. No new trial date was set, but a motions hearing was scheduled for June 9.Motions slated to be heard on that date include a motion to suppress Pippin's statement to authorities, and a motion to reduce his $100,000 bond.
