BRISTOL, Va. — For one half, Gate City gave Virginia High all it could handle.

But a seven-minute scoreless drought and 26 turnovers were too much for the Lady Blue Devils to overcome, and Virginia High claimed a 47-36 victory in the quarterfinals of the Region D, Division 2 girls basketball tournament.

After Autumn Richards hit a layup with two minutes remaining in the second quarter to pull Gate City within four points, the Lady Blue Devils couldn’t buy a basket.

Virginia High (20-4) ripped off 10 straight points, and by the time Jordan Gose knocked down a pair of foul shots with 2:54 remaining in the third to end the drought, the Lady Bearcats led 30-18.

They eventually pushed the advantage out to 20 points midway through the fourth before coasting into the semifinals.
