KINGSPORT — A blast of winter weather may have pared down the field at the 22nd annual East Tennessee Classic, but it didn’t prevent Dobyns-Bennett’s Alex Dayton from staging a larger-than-life performance during Saturday's swim meet.

Dayton shattered a school record en route to a victory in the 400-meter freestyle, won the 100 backstroke and helped the Tribe win both the 200 and 400 free relays.

With Tennessee High and few other schools unable to make the trip, Science Hill swept the three overall competitions — boys, girls and combined.

D-B coach Nathan Love said the decision was made to start the event as scheduled based on road conditions in Kingsport, which weren’t that bad Saturday morning.

Other areas, including Bristol and parts of Southwest Virginia, were hit harder by the snow overnight.
