Gate City takes fight to Gretna, captures VHSL Division 2 football championship

SALEM — Saturday night at Salem Stadium, Bill Houseright became the third head football coach in Gate City history to lead the Blue Devils to a state championship.

Afterward he was honored, proud and deeply, deeply humbled.

“Y’all don’t even need to be talking to me. You need to be talking to those young men there and all those assistant coaches. Because they just worked their tails off,” said Houseright, whose team engineered a 27-17 win over a dangerously explosive Gretna squad. “Those are the guys who are responsible. They really are. They worked like crazy.”

Houseright’s unique contributions to Gate City’s state champion renaissance will surely hold up in the light of history. But he was right about one thing. There were a lot of guys in his keeping who had something to prove in Salem on Saturday. And they proved it.

Dusty Clark was a freshman defensive back when Gretna freight-trained the Blue Devils 52-0 in the 2007 finals.
