Honaker ends Powell Valley's Robbins era with 19-13 victory

BIG STONE GAP — The curtain came down on the illustrious coaching career of Powell Valley’s Phil Robbins on Saturday.

Honaker built an early lead then held on to upend the Vikings 19-13 in the opening round of the VHSL Group A, Division 2 football playoffs at Bullitt Park.

The Tigers (7-4) advanced to play Gate City (9-2) next Saturday at 12:30 p.m. in the Region D final on the campus of Virginia- Wise.

After a career that produced seven state championships at Powell Valley, the retiring VHSL Hall of Fame coach was emotional at the conclusion of his final game.

“I was reminded a few days ago that unless you go all the way and win the state, you’re going to lose your last game,’’ Robbins said. “The tough part about today is that we had two great weeks of practice coming into this game. We just didn’t play well today.’’
