UT freshman QB Bray gets starting nod vs. Memphis

KNOXVILLE — Tyler Bray was leaving sociology Monday morning when the football program’s emissary sent to check if he attended his class told Bray he needed to go meet with Tennessee coach Derek Dooley.

At that meeting, Dooley informed the 6-foot-7 freshman he’d be starting Saturday at Memphis.

“It feels the same,” said Bray, who will be making his first collegiate start. “Just go out there and have fun playing backyard ball.”

During his weekly news conference, Dooley said starting Bray over junior Matt Simms was “the best thing for our team right now.” Dooley also specified the decision had nothing to do with Simms’ comments following the Volunteers’ 38-24 loss to South Carolina on Saturday in Columbia, S.C.
