MURFREESBORO — After suffering two seasons worth of setbacks at the hands of Dobyns-Bennett’s volleyball team, Ravenwood solved the Tribe in the nick of time.

Using a new blocking scheme, the Lady Raptors swept the Lady Indians 25-22, 25-23, 25-11 and wrestled the Class AAA state title away from the defending champs on Friday night inside the Murphy Center.

The loss marked the end of an era for D-B. It was the last match for retiring head coach Kathi Shaffer and eight seniors, who combined to win 204 games during their four seasons and never finished worse than fourth in the state.

“These girls have been Final Four two years, a state champion and a runner-up,” Shaffer said. “They’re the greatest volleyball team that’s ever played at D-B, and probably the best that ever will. What a way to go out after 27 years.”
