Lady Rebels rally to stun defending state champion Indians in 5-game thriller

KINGSPORT — The dominance of Dobyns-Bennett’s volleyball team has been well chronicled so far this season.

But on Tuesday night, Sullivan South’s resilience surged to the forefront.

The Lady Rebels came from two games down, surviving a pair of match points in the third game, to upend the defending Class AAA state champs 15-25, 17-25, 26-24, 25-19, 15-7 in a Big 8 Conference thriller.

Makensey Campbell came up huge in the deciding game, using three kills, three blocks and a pair of service aces to help put away the Tribe.

“You wait to see them have their moment like that, and she just really made that game,” South coach Wendy Ratliff said of her senior middle blocker. “She was blocking, killing it — she was unstoppable.”
